Lateral Supports & Segment Subcells for the Primary Mirror of the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GRANTECAN)

RAMEM s.a.
has been responsible for the design and manufacture of this equipment for CESA.

Each Lateral Support LSS resists the lateral effort of one of the 36 segments, which constitute the Primary Mirror.

This system behaves in an isostatic manner supporting the mirror’s weight and that of the related system (around 500 Kg.) due to the highly resistant steel gauges (0,25 – 0,6 mm. thickness) without exhibiting hardly any axial stiffness.

The total system weight is 9,5 Kg. And it is based on friction joints, and has been designed to operate at a nominal temperature of 8,5º C.

The Segment Subcells SSc are the main supports used as interfaces between   the LSS and the enormous bar framework, which holds the Primary Mirror in   place.

They are precision and highly stiff elements (145 N/µ) that support each of the   36 segments. The same as the LSS, the design is based on friction joints, and   has been designed to operate at a nominal temperature of 8,5º C.

  Polariser Interchanger

Manufactured for the CSIC and installed in the Rutherford   Appelton Laboratory

The equipment consists of and Aluminium vacuum chamber with   and inner positioning mechanism to select the polariser interject   in the neutrons´ beam.

The mechanism is controlled by a speed variator system. The   whole assembly is fixed over a high stiffness elevator-frame,   which put the equipment in the right beam position.

  Main performances:

                      Accuracy : 0,06 mm.
                  Resolution : 0,01 mm.
              Vacuum level : 10 E-7 mbar.

     3D FORM DIGITALIZER
     Example of use: Shoe Last
We have developed this equipment with the Instituto de Automatica Industrial to digitalize the last´s three dimensions (3D).

A rotary unit sends a rotation movement to the last, which is scanned by an oscillating arm device.
A linear unit moves this oscillating arm along the last´s length.

A PC receives the scanned data and reproduces, the digitalized form, in real time.
